Reviews for Nickel’s Luck

Nickel's Luck is a wonderful peek into two very different worlds
(sailor and cowboy, seaport and ranch).
The superstitions and myths believed of those who live on the water was intriguing. The rootin', tootin' and shootin' of the wild, old west was intense.”

“I had the luck of Nickel encountering this book! An author group on FB had a thread where people could share their web-sites. I had a look at S.L. Matthews' and was suitably impressed. I could see Matthews is someone who delves deep into her passion! So I gave Nickel's Luck a go and I am so glad I did.
First thing I'll say is that it is an incredibly well-written book. It has a perfect balance of richness & variety in prose without becoming cumbersome. It flows strongly and if you love language, you'll appreciate the skill and effort that has gone into making this book so readable.
The dialogue really brings the atmosphere. I'm one of those readers who hears the character voices in my head and I absolutely loved the vernacular.”

Young Ryder "Nickel" is heralded as the "luck child" of Texas port-town Indianola. A fortuitous encounter with larger-than-life cowboy Bannack leaves an impression on Ryder, sparking ambitions of heroic exploits. But hardships, betrayal, and even a hurricane will test Nickel's luck and his character.

S. L. Matthews interweaves fortune and loss, hope and devastation, in a work of historical fiction with the scope of a saga, the angst of a coming-of-age tale, the action-adventure of a Western, and the existential reflections of a literary classic. I thoroughly enjoyed this unique masterpiece of a read.

This was an incredibly interesting story with many interesting and exciting twists and turns. From the sea town of Indianola, to a ranch on the prairie, this is quite a ride. The characters were very real and you feel you get to know them on a very personal level. Their is fun, banter, friendships, heartache, loss, war, the facing of fears, and many ways that life's path can change in an instant. Bottom line, what road are you going to take when you go through things in your life.....how will you react.....still head up the mountain or give up. LOVED this book!!!
